
A “Code of Animal ill-being”? GAIA and the UWPA condemn a regressive draft revision of the Walloon Animal Welfare Code
Brussels, 4 March 2026 – With the draft revision of the Walloon Animal Welfare Code due to be examined by the Walloon Council of Ministers this Thursday, animal protection organisations are expressing deep concern. GAIA and the Walloon Union for Animal Protection (UWPA), which together represent more than 150,000 members, denounce a text that, far from strengthening animal protection, contains several major setbacks and provisions that are difficult to defend.

Brussels, 4 March 2026 – The Walloon Government is about to vote through the most serious animal-welfare setback Wallonia has ever seen. The Minister for Animal Welfare, Adrien Dolimont (MR), has included in his revision of the Walloon Animal Welfare Code a provision that would reauthorise—by way of an exemption—the keeping of cetaceans. GAIA and the Fur Free Alliance call on the European Commission: “Ban fur in Europe”
Brussels, 23 February 2026 — This Monday, GAIA and the Fur Free Alliance - an international coalition bringing together more than 45 animal-protection organisations active in over 30 countries - held an action at the European Commission to demand that the European Union put a definitive end to the fur industry. LED screen trucks parked in front of the Berlaymont building broadcast footage filmed on fur farms, exposing both European decision-makers and the public to the reality of this industry.
